Weekly Update

4/29/11 Weekly Update

This week brought us horrific storms, a royal wedding, threats of flooding, and the long-sought after release of President Omaba's birth certificate. It has had a surreal edge to it, that have made me keep checking for the cameras to see if I've been plunked down in the middle of All My Children (which also made the news, for having been canceled after being on the air for almost my entire life!) Meanwhile, most everyone here locally really only wanted to talk about the weather . . .  yes, I know its Iowa, and people do love to talk about the weather . . . but in this case, after not seeing the sun in such a long time, it was fully understandable.

Sometimes we find ourselves being blown about by all sorts of winds of the times. Our hearts don't know if we should cheer or cry. When I find myself in situations like this past week, I find its a good idea to go back to my roots, to cling to those things I truly value in life. I don't mean "cling to" as in "adhere myself" in such a way as I'd never let go. That would be too clingy! But I do mean to stop taking so much in from outside, and use what I know and love and trust as a reference point for my thoughts, feelings and actions. For me, I have always found solace and inspiration in Nature. And so I am very happy that this week we pause, and celebrate one of my favorite holidays: EarthDay.

Yes, I am aware that the rest of the nation, and perhaps even the world, celebrated EarthDay on April 22. But with all the holidays coming together, we have given ourselves a little breathing room so that we can celebrate in style! The team has been working hard to create meaningful event for the whole family. I do hope you'll come!

The Annual Meeting to be at 11:00 am this Sunday. Exercise your vote, while participating in one of the most intreguing and empowering aspects of being a UU. We believe each person is important, and so we invite you to vote on our budget and officers of the church. How cool is that!

In the meanwhile, having gone out to get my hands in the dirt this morning, I am able to send compassionate energy for a long and happy marriage to the royal couple, to the many families suffering from tornado damage in the south, to those worrying about being flooded, and to those who felt a resurgant swing of racism in the need for a standing president to produce his birth certificate. After thinking about it, I was even able to send compassionate energy to those so called "birthers" who have been actually worried by the changes in our country enough to find this a compelling issue.

See you in church!
~Eva

Contributions invited to 2011 Severe Storm Fund

Communities and families across the South were devastated by the storms and tornadoes of April 27th! Unitarian Universalist folks in Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Tennessee have major property damage and are reeling from the effects of the storms. Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was particularly hard hit, and a number of UU families there are without their homes.

Mid-South District of the UUA has established the 2011 Severe Storm Fund to assist Unitarian Universalist families and their communities as they repair their lives and properties after the tornado-filled storms.

To donate:
  • Checks should be payable to "Mid-South District," noted: "2011 Severe Storm Fund," and mailed to

Mid-South District Bookkeeper
4605 Elkins Ave., Nashville, TN 37209

  • Online Donations  may be made by clicking on the 'Donate' button on the front page of the MSD web site at http://www.msduua.org.

Weekly Update

Weekly Update 4/15/11

Hello! I’m am back from my sabbatical. I’ve seen some of you over the course of this last week’s events, and hope to see a lot more of you on Sunday. I hope you’ll come, because John Miller’s got a surprise for us!

It will take me a while to catch up on all your news. But feel free to schedule an appointment, coffee, tea, or a meal to get some one-on-one time if you’ve got a story you want me to know about. I do love knowing what’s going on with you, and understand that sometimes Sunday after church not the best time to do it.

What an amazing journey it is, to be gone for 6 months! Its such a joy to come back and see how healthy and strong and active the congregation is! Good work! Thank you for that gift of time. I know that many of you worked extra hard so that I could be away. I can’t begin to list all of you, but you know who you are . . . so please accept my deep appreciation. I hope you’ve all been enjoying being on the spiritual journey with me!

This coming week in the Christian calendar is Holy Week, and we do have a number of things scheduled. They all come with a UU twist, and so are friendly to anyone who is wanting to explore the meaning of this season . . . no matter where you are on your religious journey. Maundy Thursday is hosted by Russ Campbell, and each year he invites people to bring a favorite food to share . . . we sit together and share stories. Our Good Friday Service is always scheduled to be brief, so that you can just come on your lunch hour. Its meant to offer a place with those who are struggling with grief and sorrow to have a safe space to be held, in this ‘happy, happy time.’ And our Easter Service will celebrate the amazing beauty we can find only after we’ve experienced our world crumble. Our own Elise Hanson will be co-preaching with me . . . we’ve heard her sing, now we get to hear her find her voice! It promises to be a rich week.

This might be a good time to take a few of those little business cards with our UUSBHC information on them, and sprinkle them places you visit, or give them to friends you know are seeking for something a bit different. Holy week can be a difficult and even painful experience if you are feeling alone and outcast from your religious home. Let’s try and reach out.

See you in church!!
~Eva

I’ve got some thoughts about what in the story for all of us today. We will share Communion together in remembrance of the story of the Last Supper and the children will participate in the annual parade of palms. Unfortunately, Staci Chenannie-Hill won’t be able to join us this week. BUT, John Miller will have a very FUN SURPRISE for the children (well, all of us!) Did you know that this year our Unitarian Universalist Association is celebrating its 50th Anniversary?
UUA 50th Anniversary Oral History Project

The 50th Anniversary Task Force of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) is working to collect oral histories from our leaders of the past fifty years and from those who experienced the events surrounding the 1961 consolidation of the American Unitarian Association and the Universalist Church of America.
Were you involved in some way? Do you know someone who was? You can help us gather these memories! We are collecting both audio files and written transcripts.
Please see where you can see how to contribute and read interviews already collected:

Share and Reflect Your Thoughts on the UUA's Past, Present and Future
Also, the 50th anniversary of the UUA is a wonderful occasion to reflect about where we have been, where we stand now, and where we are going. What stories do you have to share from our past? What thoughts do you have about our present? What visions do you have for our future? Here’s a link where you can add your voice and vision:

Weekly Update

10/15/10 Weekly Update
This is the last weekly message I will write to you for a while . . . BUT, we have been so blessed with so many people stepping up to help out while I am away. And this job will be held by Lara Martinsen-Burrell. If you have anything you want included (most particularly information about church members--those Pastoral Updates, or calendar notices) please contact Janet in the Church Office who will be assembling most of it on Thursday morning.  After Thursday noon, you will have to go directly to Lara who will be adding the message on and sending it out.

While I'm away things may come up. Here are a list of people willing to help:

Weddings, Funerals, other ceremonies of life: John Miller, Sue Hill, Deblyn Russell, Staci Chenanie-Hill, Lara Martinsen-Burrell.

Pastoral Care: Stephen Orsborn, Staci Chenanie-Hill

Hospital Visits, Death in the family: John Miller

Festival Sundays & Drama Team: Lara Martinsen-Burrell

Scheduling the Building: Janet Sanders, in our Church Office

Facebook Updates: Mica Lorenz

New Program Ideas: Michaela Rich

Not sure where to go? or who to talk with?  . . . Please contact John Miller and he will help. If you are willing to organize a Caring Committee, we could still use that help--especially while I am gone. Let John know if you are able to do this.

While on sabbatical, I will be stepping back from life in the church and your lives. This will allow me to spend my time in different ways. While I am in town, if you see me around, feel free to say 'hi' but let's not talk 'shop' while we are together. In the next few weeks, I don't have a lot of travel plans, and so if you want to get together for a personal good-bye time, feel free to contact me and we can go out for coffee or take a walk or share a meal. I've been busy getting things set up to be away and have not had time to set up some of those appointments you've been asking me for. So this will be a nice, gradual way to say 'good-bye for now'.

Some people are wondering about Facebook . . . we didn't have it back when I went away last sabbatical in 2001!  But I have decided that I will be hiding your status updates on my feed. That way you can still see what I am up to, and any pictures I post, but I won't be reading about all of your lives and tempted to comment, or reading church gossip! As for e-mail, if you normally have me on your list, you can keep me there--I will have all the church email filtered into a big folder while I am away. That way I'll have a record of things to refer to when I return.

Thank you again for all the extra effort you are each giving to make this sabbatical possible for me. I am ready for it. Ready to use the time and come back with a fresh spring in my step and life flowing in my veins. Greet the new people for me . . . I'm sure there will be some new one's join while I'm away. And love each other, with kindness and care. You know these things, but like a good mother--I have to say them anyway before I leave. (Oh yes, and don't burn the house down!)

Warm hugs to you!
Hope to see you at the party!
~Eva

Roger Hahn is recovering nicely at home. I just spoke with him today. Please continue to hold him and Cindy in your thoughts and prayers . .. and check in with Cindy from time to time to see if she needs any respite from her role as caretaker.
Glenyce Butschy  and Mildred Peirce remain in the Assisted Living in Western Home. I'm sure they welcome your cards, notes, and calls.
Dottie Forsberg went through a series of medical difficulties in the past couple weeks, and was close to death. She is back to her fragile state of health, but able to do a few things with her husband Gordon Harrington. Please hold her in your thoughts and prayers, and touch base with Gordon to make sure he is supported through this. They reside at Friendship Village.
